How To Sell Your RV For More

By Jay Aydelotte

Selling a recreational vehicle such as a fifth wheel, travel trailer, pop up camper, truck camper or any other type of RV can turn into stressful experience, unless you know how to make it profitable. Before you begin the preparation process, take a few minutes and think about what you look for when you are shopping for an RV. Make a list of the things that make you concerned about buying a used RV and what makes you more confident about buying one. Now take some time and walk through your RV and make a list of all the things that are in your good and bad list, in other words find everything that is wrong with your unit, and everything that is a positive about it. To get the most from a buyer, you will need to repair everything that is not working properly, don’t just point it out to the prospective buyer, fix it. Never try to make a temporary repair, they will almost always haunt you in the end. If you are able to make proper repairs, you can save some money, if not, take it to the proper repair facility and have it fixed.

Once everything is working properly, you need to thoroughly clean the inside and outside of the recreational vehicle. You only get one chance to make a great first impression, make sure it is a spotlessly clean one. Wax the outside, and polish all the chrome inside, including the sinks and shower. Automotive wax will really make a shower or sink shine like new. Clean the tires with tire cleaner and put a tire brightener on them when you are finished. Clean all the windows, wash the curtains, clean the carpets and upholstery, wash the bed spread. I think it is safe to say that most RV shoppers expect to buy something that looks like new, so if yours does not, you have probably lost their interest long before you get to talk about price or features.

Now that everything is clean and working properly, get your maintenance records together and make a couple copies of them to show or even give to any serious shoppers. Call your finance company and see if they would be interested in talking to anyone that is seriously interested in buying your RV. One of the most significant advantages that a dealer has is that they can help a buyer get financing, so if you can offer that same help, you will get more out of the sale. If your finance company is not aggressively interested, shop the Internet, there are many finance companies that will be willing to help, since lending money is their business. I would also suggest shopping the Internet for companies that sell warranties for used recreational vehicles. Depending on the cost, you might even consider paying for it, but just having the information ready to show a prospective buyer, will make them feel more comfortable with buying your RV.
